Description:
The Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), a division of the Institute of International Education, is a collaborating agency of U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, charged with the administration of the Fulbright Scholar Program, the flagship international exchange program of the U.S. Department of State. The program provides grants to U.S. scholars and professionals to lecture or conduct research abroad (U.S. Program) and brings foreign scholars to the United States to conduct research or lecture (Visiting Program).

Purpose of Position: The Outreach and Public Relations Unit seeks a Public Relations Officer to develop communications strategies and implement tactics to support the organization’s print and online outreach efforts.


Major duties:

• Develop and implement web communications strategy, including e-newsletter. Work with senior recruiting staff to make print and online advertising purchases.

• Seek new opportunities to tell the organization’s story and recruit scholars for prestigious, world-renowned educational program. This includes interviewing scholars and other stakeholders, managing an editorial calendar, and prioritizing stories for release through various channels.

• Exercise editorial responsibilities for all major publications. Work with graphic designer to ensure that established style and format are followed. Develop and coordinate production of print publications, including the occasional mass mailing. Establish project time lines and production schedules and ensure their timely implementation.

• Strategize, write, and distribute news releases, fact sheets, etc. to media outlets, as directed. Maintain up-to-date press and media distribution lists.

• Define, submit, and coordinate applicable speaking opportunities for senior leadership.

• Monitor expenditures, project costs and future cost projections

Qualifications: Education/Experience/Skills:

• At least a Bachelor's degree in journalism, advertising, marketing, communications or a related field.
• Three to five years of demonstrated public relations experience, ideally in the education sector or with a public relations agency
• Exceptional writing and editorial skills
• Experience writing press releases, pitching stories to the media, and monitoring coverage.
• Highly detail-oriented with excellent written and verbal communications skills.
• Creative problem solver with ability to work independently and develop and implement a strategic plan.
• Strong planning skills and ability to multi-task several projects simultaneously.
• Fast learner, resourceful, and possessing excellent computer skills.
• Ability to work with tight deadlines and deliver exceptional results.
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products
• Experience with the Internet and Web-based publications and outreach
• High comfort level working with scholars, graphic artists, printers, mail houses and other vendors
• Skilled at managing and coordinating multiple tasks
* Agency experience or familiarity with education sector a plus
• International experience a plus
