Job Description

Health Affairs (http://www.healthaffairs.org ), the nation’s leading health policy journal, published by Project HOPE, has two (2) openings for seasoned editors to participate in the manuscript evaluation, review, and revision processes which include reading manuscripts, recruiting reviewers, evaluating review comments, and working with authors to improve their manuscripts within established guidelines. The Senior Editors will also take on the responsibility for thematic issue planning and development and section planning and development. The Senior Editors will also perform writing duties as assigned.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
# Correspond with authors during revision process, making recommendations and offering guidance on: writing, incorporating substantive comments from review process, and adhering to editorial requirements.
# Read manuscripts and review comments on assigned papers; write memos summarizing review outcomes and making publication recommendations.
# Evaluate revised papers and prepare papers for production.
# Work with editorial team and management to develop content for and manage theme issues/journal sections as needed.
# Participate in editorial meetings.
# Maintain expertise in health policy by reading relevant journals, books, news articles, attending conferences/meetings, etc.
# Further develop contacts in the field through phone contact, working with authors and reviewers, attending meetings.
# Be available for writing assignments as needed.
# Help to identify prospective content for the journal.
# Recruit reviewers for manuscripts and manage review process for assigned papers, monitor deadlines and maintain contact with reviewers throughout process.
# Monitor author deadlines, maintain contact with authors, answer queries pertaining to manuscripts, etc.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
# Interest and experience in health care and social policy/sciences.
# Ability to translate complicated material into prose that are suitable for lay audiences.
# Excellent oral and written communication skills.
# Must be highly organized and analytical.
# Must be able to work independently and within a team.
# Copy editing skills.
# Must be able to juggle multiple tasks and meet strict deadlines.
# Must be comfortable using a variety of software packages (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, databases) and Web applications.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
# 10+ years of professional work experience. Minimum 3-5 in policy and publication environments.
# A Bachelor’s degree is required. Degrees in journalism, social sciences, or a related field are preferred. (Advanced degree a plus).
